Currently you can only divide between DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray media type. There are pure 3D Blu-Ray and combos are standard with Blu-Ray +3 D Blu-ray. A subdivision in the profiler and the profiler iphone would be very useful. There are already concrete plans?

Personally, I'd rather see it added as a Feature, because technically speaking it's not a different medium. A medium is:
- DVD
- Blu-ray
- HD DVD
- Laser Disc

The disc itself (the hardware so to speak) is still the same as a regular Blu-ray, only the video has been encoded in a different way.

So with that in mind, I'd love to have an extra Features Icon added to identify 1080p 3D.

I agree with Taro.  3D is content, not media.

Yes, this will need to somehow show which titles are backward compatible. Most are, but a significant number aren't.

That is indeed true: some 3D Blu-rays aren't playable on a regular Blu-ray player. However, some remarks I have about that:
- If that's the case, they'll always include a regular 2D Blu-ray as well. That somewhat alleviates Ace's concerns or not?
- It's true that not all Blu-ray players are able to play back 3D content but the same is valid for older players or players not updated, with Picture-in-Picture, BD Live, etc. So I still see it as the same medium (the material on which it's encoded), but with different encoding. Therefor I thought it's more a Feature rahter than a new medium

Whatever the case, I definitely agree this needs to be a tackeld as the number of 3D Blu-rays released is growing and we are currently unable to correctly track them save for local only tags

Actually, there are some 3D Blu-rays with no 3D version included. See here:

Even if it is the same format, it would be good to show this as a "feature" that not all players may support.

A bit like DTS for regular DVD's.

My thoughts exactly.  The fact that it isn't playable on all blu-ray players doesn't change the fact that it is still a blu-ray disc so it should be a feature check box...in my opinion.

I agree with threat starter scarl on this issue.

We definitely need Blu-ray 3D in official Media Type.

I'll try to explain my thoughts a bit.

Lets take two examples:

1) First Blu-ray release of Coraline.
- This release includes anaglyph 3D version along with few glasses.
- Title nor Edition fields shouldn't have 3D mentioned.
- This 3D version we should include in Features checkbox list as e.g. Anaglyph 3D (or something else), also some DVD release would benefit from this.
- No need for new Media Type for this.

2) Despicable Me release with 3D.
- This release includes "real" stereoscopic 3D (Blu-ray 3D) version and 2D version on second disc.
- Title nor Edition fields shouldn't have 3D mentioned because it isn't mentioned on cover.
- For this version we need that Blu-ray 3D Media Type so we can add this to database as Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray combo release.

Here is screenshot of that situation:

I have made custom Media Type for Blu-ray 3D.
Both Blu-ray media types checked.
And regular 2D version disc added as child profile.

This is exactly the same what we have used with Blu-ray + DVD combo releases.
So, why we should do something different now with Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray (or even Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD) combo releases.

Yes I know that in the end only real difference between Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray is on different video codecs.
But seriously, can we really compare Blu-ray 3D in same way as MPEG-2, AVC and VC-1 codecs on regular Blu-ray releases. I think not.
Blu-ray 3D is so much more than just another (MVC) codec. For example, you need special hardware to watch those movies.

Therefore Blu-ray 3D should be included as official Media Type.

Like I said it is just a different type of the same media, so a selectable extra option in the features will do the job. Just as an exemple the MGM MOD DVD-R don't work with all the dvd reader, but we don't have a MOD media type because of this.

Assuming they are contribuable wich I have no idea of...

Because they are two different medias. No DVD reader is able to read a Bu-Ray disc wich isn't the case with the 3D Blu-Ray as must BR reader can.

Can sound stupid but, why not use the edition field for something like that? Unless I'm wrong that fit the rules and this isn't different than what we did for the DTS sound format who don't work on all system.

I can see where you're coming from JaLe. Some thoughts I have regarding the points you mentioned:

1. Distinction between anaglyphic and stereoscopic 3D. True, there needs to be a distiction between those two but I would rather do that by creating two different 3D feature icons. Perhaps one with green/red glasses for anaglyphic and one with clear glasses for stereoscopic?

2. It's true that you need specific hardware to enjoy Blu-ray 3D, but I think the same is valid for Picture-in-Picture (not all player are PiP enabled) as well as BD Live (you need a BD player that can be connected to the Internet), both of which are Features.

One nasty little thing is the Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray combos as basically you would have two child profiles that are very similar to each other, where only the Features and possibly audio tracks will differ.

With these two points in mind I'd go with adding the two 3D options as Features, where users can still locally create a custom collection category to keep their stereoscopi 3D Blu-rays seperate from the other Blu-rays (just like I have a custom collection category for Blu-rays and DVD's, to keep them seperated)

That's just my opinion of course and each opinion has good points. It would be nice to hear from Invelos if they are considering implementing this and if so, which way they'll go
