Hi,

how about a IMDB Data-Import function when adding new discs (Get the data from imdb like Production year, cast, producers .....)???

Saw that feature in MYMOVIES and it is really nice...

Asside from the fact that IMDBs data is questionable at best, IMDB prohibits data mining, unless you pay them a licensing fee of course. I would rather not see Ken, the developer, have to raise the cost of DVD Profiler just to support the import of data that, on the most part, would have to be changed due to innacuracies.

I agree... that is actually the absolutely last thing I would want to see for this program.

I have no problem with the rules and the forum bullies, but the day Invelos starts officially using imdb-data, I'm gone.

I actually purchased the iCollect Movies Pro App before DVD Profiler iOS was announced and they use the same IMDB import function as MyMovies. I scanned in about 200 of my titles and compared the data with the same titles in DVD Profiler and the differences were glaring. One example is Disney’s “101 Dalmatians” animated classic UPC #786936735413.

iCollect Movies’ cast & crew for this film includes the cast & crew for both the 1961 Disney animated classic and the 1996 remake with Glenn Close and Jeff Daniels. The rest of the data is woefully incomplete.

Any title with the same name get’s the cast & crew added from both titles. I guess the data is mined using the Title as the key identifier. There were also many actor’s names misspelled in other titles I compared.

If this is the type of imported data one can expect from IMDB then you can count me out.

You can do that using DJ Doena's excellent tool "castcrew edit2 . In fact IMDb data is far more accurate for names' spelling than dvdprofiler which ignores voluntarily correct accentuation. Often roles are not in IMDb exactly as credited, but this is far to be a problem. And the great advantage to use IMDb names is a perfect linking, which is quite impossible to reach with names entered per Invelos rules.

Using IMDb data is a major improvement for your local database, but since Invelos doesn't want those data, you have to keep them local and never contribute.

I would definitely do my own thing locally only as well.

No thanks, there's no need to create another IMDB clone on the interweb, even if I trusted their data.

In addition to this Tool: If you want to have a quick look at imdb, you can add the Button "Search Title on imdb" in your Toolbar. (Right-click -> customize -> commands, in category "online")

I'm personnally not interested to have an imdb import as built-in funktion (if I want it, the Tool works good) and I don't really think this would be allowed without paying to imdb, so I think this wouldn't get added.

It's not the tool, it's the what some users do with it:

No it isn't as the DVDP database isn't. They are starting point that's all, nothing beats the improvement we do in our personal database.

The day I got all my cast/crew linked for real was a rewarding one to me and for that I must thank myself (and a little bit T!M) for the decision I took to never use a database anymore.

Please NO!. Most of the programs that use IMDb data are sbstantially mpore than this program is, and we are a whole lot more accurate despite some of our problems.

I agree with that. But taking the example of my own personal database, the differences in names with Invelos are more than 1000 (mostly accented names), only 20 with IMDb (roman numbers for distinction). So, as a starting point, I think IMDb allows less work to have a perfect linking.

I just have to say I keep reading about how perfect many users talk about their local being but it "has to stay local," so therefore everyone misses out and the online ends up being the lowest common denominator.

I think that goes completely against the spirit of the original program that was started over a decade ago, and the developers need to take several steps back and reflect on what went wrong and how to fix it, even if it requires a major overhaul.
99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1."
