| Posted: | | | | Linked cast / crew film profilesI mentioned this in the wrong forum so I'd like to bring it up here as a feature suggestion: OK: You have one film with a single cast and crew that is common across 20+ UPC/locality combinations, however: The cast / crew data is populated willy-nilly across all these different versions. Some have an extensive listing, and some have almost nothing. Why can't we come up with a mechanism for linking all these profiles together, so that there's a unified cast / crew listing? ---- I know this would require a non-trivial program change, but then again "linked-list" database programming is not particularly new. Except for issues of internationalization, I think it would be really awesome to have one master cast / crew list for a film that would propagate as needed to others. |

Well, there is the first, problem: Where would this master list come from? Right now we have the simple "From the actual credits" rule and it's hard enough to satisfy everyone there. Now imagine if re-releases years later have new credits. And if you go into International, all hell breaks loose ... some titles have the original credits, other have slightly altered ones and yet others have roles localized. I'm not saying I'm against it, in fact I don't care enough for cast and crew to be either for or against it, but the technical side would be the least problem for such an undertaking. cya, Mithi | | | Mithi's little XSLT tinkering - the power of XML --- DVD-Profiler Mini-Wiki |

I never enter cast / crew data because it's so daunting from my perspective, BUT: I don't know how we link together actors with variations of credits across multiple film titles now, but it would require extending that somehow. Some system that would reflect variations by locality? Where is a technical thread that describes in depth how all the "credited as" stuff is linked together? |

Where is a technical thread that describes in depth how all the "credited as" stuff is linked together? The how is as follows: Based on CLT results, a common name is chosen. That name is then entered into the cast list, with the name in the credits entered into the 'credited as' field. Now, assuming everyone follows these steps, and all the credits for the actor in question are correct, all variants will link to the same common name. This works because, as far as the database is concerned, every entry now has the same name...the common name. The 'credited as' name is just the name that is displayed. That's a tad over simpliied, but I think that covers the basics. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
