I've frequently seen Television listed as a Genre when actually the content first appeared as a television program.  This bothered me but I never knew how to deal with it.  I decided to do something about it and here's what I came up with: I created a custom media type called Television and added a small image of a Television set to be used as an icon. Now when I select that media type here's what I see displayed: TV image
Anyone else address this?

Never thought of it that way.  The content was delivered by the television media.  Sort of fitting after all.

But by that logic, you'd need a media type "cinema" because that's where most movies premiere. Only Direct-to-DVD movies would then get the DVD media type. But only if the movie wasn't from the 80s and was a Direct-to-Video release for which you'd need yet another media type.

The media type is the type of media (DVD, Blu-ray, etc) on which you bought the movie or TV show you're holding.

Don't let me stop you. I'm not overly fond of the Television genre either. But your solution is by no means better. Instead of using one ill-fitted field (genre) you use another (media type)

I did understand your initial post.  Here's a bit of background:  I was creating a Report and wanted some way to flag the item when it was originally a television production.  I wanted the header to reflect the genre of the production and Television was not appropriate.  I, rather arbitrairily, chose to add Media type as it seemed as though it wouldn't cause problems and could easily be checked. Until your post I never correlated Media, the disc format to Media, the genre.  Here's a REPORT IMAGE.
I then discovered that in Profiler I could add a header to the cover image and that was icing on the cake.  The image shows the television cover header and that wasn't there previously, just the little TV icon. This works well for me and due to the work involved I'm not recommending it to anyone.  It has occurred to me that Media as a Genre encompassing all types of news media etc. would be handy.

Just a brief wrap up here. I've completed removing Television as a genre where inappropriate.  Profiler Query helped me find a couple of dozen discs which were in locations other than the main binders.  Great tool!  I did have one strange problem with the Television header not displaying on some profile front covers.  It turned out that if the Case type started with HD the header would not display.  Took me a while to figure that one out.  Strange.

Genre refers to the content, not the media.  Whether a theatrical or television production has no bearing on the genre.
